You arrive home from work, close the front door, drop your bag, and literally slide down the wall onto the hallway floor. You feel completely shattered, empty, and numb, even though you only sat at a desk all day.
You aren't tired from physical labour. You are exhausted because you just spent eight continuous hours running an intensive, real-time stage performance called: "Look How Normal and Neurotypical I Am."
1. What Masking Really Entails
Masking (or camouflaging) is the conscious or subconscious suppression of natural neurodivergent behaviours in order to avoid criticism, ostracisation, or professional penalties. It includes:
- Manually calculating eye contact: "Look away for 2 seconds, look back for 4 seconds, nod now."
- Suppressing natural stims: sitting on your hands to stop tapping, biting your lip to avoid interrupting.
- Pre-scripting casual conversations and mimicking colleagues' body language.
- Hiding executive dysfunction behind an elaborate façade of hyper-organised perfectionism.
2. The Identity Crisis of Chronic Masking
When you mask continuously from childhood into adulthood, you begin to lose track of where the performance ends and your real soul begins. You wonder: "Do I actually like this music, or do I just pretend to like it because it's socially acceptable? Who am I when nobody is watching?"
β’ Private Unmasking: When alone at home, deliberately give yourself permission to stim: rock, pace, fidget, vocalise, or lie in strange positions without self-judgement.
β’ Identify Safe Havens: Choose one or two trusted friends with whom you can drop the script completely: speak with natural ADHD tangents and take pauses without panic.
β’ Energy Accounting: Recognise that high-masking social events (corporate dinners, networking) carry a steep neurochemical invoice. Schedule buffer rest the day after.
β’ Prune Inauthentic Obligations: If a social group only accepts the polished, masked version of you, they are not your tribe.
3. The Joy of Being Real
Unmasking is a gradual, courageous journey of self-reclamation. When you stop burning all your energy performing for a world that demands conformity, you unlock immense reserves of creativity, humour, and authentic joy.
