It is 10:00 PM. You are exhausted, but instead of going to sleep, you find yourself with nine Amazon tabs open comparing air fryers you will never buy, while snacking on salt and vinegar crisps, playing a mobile puzzle game with your thumb, and watching a YouTube documentary on 1.5x speed.
You are frantically stacking four different stimulation sources at once. You are not being gluttonous or lazy; your brain is experiencing a state of acute neurochemical starvation.
1. The Dopamine Scavenger Hunt
Dopamine is the neurotransmitter of anticipation, drive, and focus. In an ADHD brain, dopamine is either produced in lower baseline quantities or cleared out of the synaptic cleft far too rapidly by overactive transporter proteins.
Your brain experiences low dopamine like physical hunger. It will impulsively reach for the fastest, cheapest calories it can find: junk food, sugar, online shopping, social media notifications, video games, or interpersonal drama. It is hunting for dopamine scraps just to stay conscious.
2. Cheap Dopamine vs Nourishing Dopamine
The tragedy of cheap dopamine (endless doomscrolling) is that it provides a momentary spike followed by a deeper trough, leaving you more exhausted and irritable than when you started.
• Appetisers (5 mins): High-yield, fast boosts to jump-start energy: cold glass of water, ten star jumps, pet your dog, step outside into crisp air.
• Mains (20-45 mins): Deeply satisfying, nourishing activities: a brisk walk in the park, cooking a hearty meal from scratch, playing an instrument, sketching.
• Sides (Passive Boosts): Background layers to make boring tasks tolerable: brown noise, high-tempo soundtracks, chewing gum, a fidget toy.
• Desserts (Proceed with Caution): High-dopamine traps that are easy to binge: TikTok, Reddit, video games. Enjoy intentionally with a preset timer.
3. Feeding the Brain with Dignity
Recognise your cravings for stimulation as legitimate biological cues. When you provide your brain with high-quality, nourishing dopamine throughout the day, the urge to binge on digital junk at midnight naturally dissolves.
