It is 2:15 PM on a glorious Sunday afternoon. The sun is shining. You have nowhere you need to be. You have a free afternoon ahead of you.

And yet, an unmistakable, heavy grey shadow has just fallen across your chest.

Your brain has quietly begun to chant: "Tomorrow is Monday. In eighteen hours, the alarms go off. In nineteen hours, the emails start. The weekend is over."

You can't relax to watch a movie. You can't enjoy a book. You just sit on the couch in a frozen state of suspended animation, doomscrolling your phone while feeling guilty for wasting the final hours of your freedom.

1. The 'Waiting Mode' Macrocosm

Most ADHDers are intimately familiar with Waiting Mode: if you have a dentist appointment at 3:00 PM on a Tuesday, your entire morning from 9:00 AM onwards is paralysed. You can't start anything because you might be interrupted.

The Sunday Scaries are simply Waiting Mode stretched across an entire 24-hour day. Your brain perceives Monday morning as an enormous, high-demand executive wall. Because our brains struggle with smooth cognitive transitions, we begin psyching ourselves up—and burning stress hormones—nearly a full day in advance.

2. The Horror of the Cold Start

The deepest root of Sunday dread is not necessarily that you hate your work; it is the fear of the Monday morning reboot. You remember the agony of sitting at your desk at 9:00 AM, looking at a wall of 50 unread emails, and having no idea what your priorities are or where to begin.

Your subconscious spends Sunday panicking about the executive energy it will take to jump-start that frozen engine tomorrow.

"Sunday dread is rarely about Monday's tasks; it is about the terrifying friction of having to boot up an uncooperative brain from scratch."
🛡️ The Friday 'Breadcrumb' Antidote

• The Friday 4:30 PM Landing Pad: Before closing your laptop on Friday, write a sticky note with just three micro-steps for Monday morning (e.g. 1. Open slide deck, 2. Email Sarah the PDF, 3. Make coffee). Knowing your landing pad is already prepared stops your brain from obsessing all weekend.

• Reclaim Sunday Night with Comfort Rituals: Schedule an intentional, high-comfort activity for Sunday evening (homemade pizza night, watching your favourite comfort series). Give Sunday its own dedicated identity instead of letting it be Monday's waiting room.

• Low-Stakes Monday Mornings: Never schedule intense high-stakes presentations or critical negotiations before 11:00 AM on Monday. Give yourself a gentle runway.

3. Today Belongs to Today

Remind yourself firmly when that Sunday shadow creeps in: "Tomorrow will have its own energy, its own coffee, and its own answers. Right now, it is Sunday afternoon, and this sunshine belongs to me."
